Requirements
To become a volunteer victim advocate you must meet the following criteria:
- Be able to provide your own transportation and show proof of appropriate vehicle insurance
- Be able to work on-call
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Have a valid Colorado driver's license
- Live within 30 minutes of the Sheridan city limits
- Pass a background check, including both criminal and driving
- Pass an oral interview
Position Description
The volunteer victim advocate must make a one year commitment to the program and complete the 40-hour training session for certification as an on-call victim advocate. The training session is provided by the City at no cost to the volunteer.
The volunteer victim advocate is to provide, but is not limited to, immediate contact with victims of crimes. This includes providing support to victims and co-victims, information on the criminal justice system, agency referrals, and emergency needs.
The volunteer advocate is required to be on-call for 12-hour shifts. A minimum of four 12-hour shifts are required each month. The volunteer is also responsible for notifying the victim of their rights, which are guaranteed under law.
