Sheridan General Municipal Election
November 3, 2009

At the November 3, 2009 General Municipal Election, Sheridan voters will elect a Mayor and four City Council Members, one each from Wards 1 and 2 and two from Ward 3and vote on two ballot questions. The election will be conducted as a mail ballot election coordinated with Arapahoe County. Ballots will be sent out by the County between October 9th and 16th. You may either mail your ballot to Arapahoe County or use one of the drop-off sites. The City of Sheridan is a drop-of site and is open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Sheridan General Municipal Election
November 3, 2009

At the November 3, 2009 General Municipal Election, Sheridan voters will elect a Mayor and four City Council Members, one each from Wards 1 and 2 and two from Ward 3. The election will be conducted as a mail ballot election coordinated with Arapahoe County.

Candidate Packets will be available in the City Clerk's office on Monday, August 3, 2009, for persons wishing to run for office. Petitions may be circulated beginning August 4, 2009. Candidates must, at the time of the election, meet the following criteria:

Municipal elections are administered by the City Clerk, under the provisions of the Charter, the Municipal Code of the City of Sheridan, and the Colorado Elections Laws. City elections are non-partisan.

Petitions: Each candidate must be nominated by petitions signed by at least 25 registered electors residing within the Ward from which the officer is to be elected. Only petition forms obtained from the City Clerk's office may be circulated. Petitions may be circulated beginning August 4, 2009 and must be returned to the City Clerk by no later than 4:30 p.m. August 24, 2009. Each candidate must turn in all of his/her petitions at one time.

Campaign Contributions and Reporting Requirements: Candidates and others pertinently involved must adhere to the provisions of the Colorado Fair Campaign Practices Act, a copy of which is enclosed in this packet. All forms must be filed with the City Clerk and may be filed by FAX, but must be followed by an original hard copy within seven days of the due date (CRS 1-45-109(2)).

Political Signs: Signs in support of a candidate for office must be in compliance with local, state and federal laws.

(J) Temporary political signs. Such signs are temporary signs indicating support for a particular candidate or cause in an election and are subject to the following restrictions:

(1) They shall not exceed sixteen (16) square feet per face in area;
(2) They shall be limited to wall, window or detached type placement;
(3) Detached signs shall not exceed eight (8) feet in height above grade;
(4) They shall not be constructed of paper or cloth and shall not be in form of a banner;
(5) They shall be non-illuminated;
(6) They shall not exceed two (2) signs per street frontage;
(7) They shall not be placed closer than three (3) feet to the front or side property line or street line, or within a twenty-five (25) foot vision triangle on corner lots; and
(8) They shall not be erected more than ninety (90) days preceding an election and shall be removed within fifteen (15) days following an election.

State and Federal: No signs advertising a political candidate may be installed in the right-of-way for a State or Federal Highway.


How to Register to Vote

To register to vote you must be 18 years of age by the next Election Day, a citizen of the United States, and a resident at your present address at least thirty days prior to the election.

You can register to vote at the General Government window in the Sheridan Municipal Center located at 4101 S. Federal Boulevard or the Arapahoe County Clerk's Office at 5334 S. Prince Street in Littleton.

Municipal Elections

Regular municipal elections for the mayor and city council are held in November in odd numbered years. The mayor is elected to a four year term. The city council is elected to four year staggered terms. With the recent adoption of the city charter the city clerk and city treasurer are no longer elected positions. The next regular municipal election will be November, 2009. Special municipal elections may be held as needed for initiative, referendum, and recall elections. General Elections

General Elections, where United States senators, representatives to congress, state, district officers, county commissioners and other county officers are elected, are held in November of even numbered years. Information pertaining to the General Election is available from the Arapahoe County Clerk .
